principle of utility
greatest happiness for greatest number. tells us that as long as we receive happiness or pleasure out of actions or behaviors they are good. a teleological principle (measures happiness in hedons)
law applied to everyone and could be understood by reason. saying what ought to happen or what should happen (but not for sure). not always valid.
