jurisdiction an area of authority or control; the right to administer justice
original jurisdiction lower courts have the authority to hear cases for the first time, in the fideral system district courts and hte Supreme Court (in a limited number of cases), have original juridiction where trials are conducted, evidence is presented, and juries determine the outcome of the case
