pscyhopathology the study of abnormal behavior
subjective discomfort emotional distress or emotional plain; this is a sign of abnormality Ex: a woman suffers from a fear of going outside her house for example, would experience a great deal of anxiety when trying to leave home and distress over being unable to leave
maladptiveanything that does not allow a person to function with in or adpt to the stresses and veryday demand of life : maladaptive behavior includes behavior that may intitally help a person cope but has harmful or damaging effects Ex: a woman who cuts her self to relieve anxiety does experience intitial relief but is harmed by the action
psychological disorder an patten of behavior that cause people significant distress, causes them to harm others, or hamrs their ability to function in daily life
anxiety disorders disorders in which the main symptom is excessive or unrealistic anxiety and fearfulness
free-floating anxiety anxiety that is unrelated to any realistic, known source
panic attack sudden onset of intense panic in whcih multiple physical symtoms of stress occur, ofetn with feelings that one is dying
panic disorder disorder in which pani attacks occur frequently enough to cause the person difficulty in adjusting to daily life; having a panic disorder can lead to agoraphobia
obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) disorder in which intruding, recurring thoughts or obsessions create anxiety that is releived by performing a repetitive, ritualistic behavior or mental act
acute stress disorder (ASD) a disorder reulsting from exposure to a major stresor, with symptoms of anxiety, dissociation, reucrring nightmares, sleep disturbances, problems in concentration, and moments in which people seem to "relive" the event in dreams and flash backs for a s long as 1 month following the event
posttraumatic disorder (PTSD) a disorder relsuting from exposure to a major stressor, with symptoms of anxiety dissociation, and concentration problems lasting for more than 1 month : may not occyr until 6 months or late after the event
generalized anxiety disorderdisorder in which a person has feelings of dread and impending doom along with physical symptoms of stress, which lasts 6 months or more: escessive ancxiety have no real source, nor can the person control the feelings even if an effort is made to do so: they feel tense, edgy, get tired easily, and may have trouble concentrating
affect in pscyh a term indicating "emotion" or "mood"
mood disorders disorders in which mood is severly disturbed
major depression severe depression that comes on suddenly and seems to have no ecternal cause, or is to severe for current circumstances : would dall at far extreme of sadness: are depressed for most of everyday : most common diagnosed mood disorder
manic having the quality of excessive xcitement, energy and elation or irriatibility
bipolar disordersevere mood swings between major depressive episodes and manic episodes : there is usually no external cause for the extreme ups and downs of the bipolar person : the depressive phases are indistinguishable from major depression but give way to manic epsiodes that may last from a few weeks to a few months
dissociative disorders disorders in which there is a break in sconscious awarenss, memory, the sense of identity or some combination Ex: people who sometimes drive somehwere and then wonder how they got there
dissociative amnesia loss of memory, for personal information, wither partial or complete : cannot remember things such as own name or personal events
dissociative fugue traveling away from familiar surroundings with amnesia about the trip and possible amnesia for personal information : usually take place after an emotional trauma and are more common in items of disasters or war
dissociative identity disorder disorder occuring when a person seems to have two or more disitinct personalities with in one body
depersonalization disorder dissociative disorder in which individuals feel deatched and disconnected from them selves, their bodies and theur surroundings ; have lower brain activity in areas responsible for their sense of body awareness
schizophrenia sever disorder in which the person suffers from disordered thinking, bizarre hebavior, hallucinations, and inability to distinguish between fantasy and reality
pscyhiotic term applied to a person who is no longer able to eprceive what is real and what is fantasy as wells as disturbances in thinking, emotions, behavior and perception
delusions false beliefs held by a person who refuses to accept evidence of their falseness
delusional disorder a psychotic disorder in which the primary symtom is one or more delusions
hallucinations false sensory perceptions, such as hearing voices that do not really exist
flat affect a lack of emotional responsiveness
disorganzied (schizophrenia) type of schizophrenia in which behavior is bizarre and cildish, and thinking, speech and motor actions are very disorganized : are socially impaired, unable to engage in the normal social rituals of daily life
catatonic type of schizophrenia in which the person experiences periods of statuelike immobility mixed with occasional bursts of energetic, frantic movement, and talking
paranoid type of schizophrenia in which the person suffers from delusions of persecution, grandeur, and jealousy, together with hallucinations : their delusions is very bizarre
personality disorder disorders in which a person adopts a persistent, rigid, and maladaptive pattern of behavior that interferes with normal social interactions ; does not affect merely one aspect of the person's life, such as a higher than normal level of anixety or a set of distorted beliefs
antisocial personality disorder disorder in whixh a person has no morals or conscience and often behaves in an impulsive manner with out regard for the consequences of that behavior : these people are agianst society , sometimes called a sociopath, habitually breaks the laws, disobeys rules, tells lies
borderline personality disorder maladaptive perosnality patern in which the person is moody, unstable, lacks a slear sense of identity and often clings to others : untrusting of others, some may engage in drug abuse, suicidal behavior etc
