Popular in 40's and 50's. Samba singer that went on to be one of the most recognizable names in Samba and went on to gain fame in America. Criticized for giving in to American commercialism and projecting a false image of Brazil.
Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932
1932. End of old Republic. Uprising of Paulistas against the 1930 coup where Vargas took Presidency; Vargas was supported by the military and the political elites of Minas Gerais. The movement grew out of local resentment from the fact that Vargas ruled by decree, not by a Constitution. Eroded the autonomy of states from the term of the 1891 Constitution and preventing the inauguration of the governor of São Paulo Júlio Prestes in the Presidency of the Republic. Simultaneously overthrew President Washington Luis.
1930. Vargas's constitution prohibited him from preceding himself in presidency, so he developed the Cohen plan which was a Communist take over. Vargas announced he was seizing emergency powers, dissolved Congress, and canceled elections. On the Constitution concentrated virtually all power in Vargas' hands. The regime created by this document is known as the Estado Novo (New State).
a way of maintaining government control in industry. Different parts of the government body work seperately but in interest of the whole. In theory the government mediates between syndicates and workers, but in practice was a vertical system in which the syndicated were above workers.
late 60's/early 70s. Massive economic and industrial growth in general, low inflation, exceptional economic growth occurred during the military regime in Brazil, contributing to the height of their popularity.
