Terms	Definitions
Photosynthesis	the process by which plants and some other organisms capture the energy in sunlight and use it to make food
Homeostasis	process by which organisms maintain a relatively stable internal environment
Primary Succession	succession that occurs on surfaces where no soil exists
Secondary Succession	succession following a disturbance that destroys a community without destroying the soil
Stem Action
Turgor	a cell's swelling against its cell wall caused by the pressure of the cell's contents; making it "crunch"
Flow of Energy	The transfer of energy through an ecosystem from the sun (usually) to producers, to herbivores, to carnivores, and ultimately to decomposers.
Radiant Energy	energy that is transmitted in the form of (electromagnetic) radiation
Germination	plant materials and animal waste used as fuel
Biomass	plant materials and animal waste used as fuel
