Terms	Definitions
photosynthesis	process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high-energy carbohydrates such as sugars and starches
turgor pressure	the pressure that water molecules exert against the cell wall
germination	the process whereby seeds or spores sprout and begin to grow
capallary action	a narrow tube to draw a liquid upward
radiant energy	energy that is transmitted in the form of (electromagnetic) radiation
geotropism	response to earth's gravity, as the growing of roots downward in the ground
food chain	(ecology) a community of organisms where each member is eaten in turn by another member
biomass	the total mass of living matter in a given unit area
decomposers	organisms that break down wastes and dead organisms and return raw materials to the environment
compost	a mixture of decaying vegetation and manure
