What is the tongue comprised of? muscles, nerves and blood vessels. covered by mucous membranes
What are the intrinsic muscles? superior longitudinal, transverse, vertical and inferior longitudinal
What are the extrinsic muscles? genioglossus, hyoglossus, styloglossus
Where do intrinsic muscles originate and insert? origins are inside the tongue, insertions are inside the tongue
What do intrinsic muscles determine? the shape of the tongue, they lie within the tongue
What do extrinsic muscles control? the position of the tongue, they originate at a point distinct from the tongue
Superior longitudinal changes shape of tongue by shortening and thickening, most superficial, runs in oblique and longitudinal direction
Transverse changes shape of tongue, makes tongue long and narrow, runs in transverse direction deep to superior longitudinal
Vertical located on ventral (bottom) surface of tongue, runs in vertical direction, changes shape of tongue by making long and narrow
Inferior Longitudinal changes shape of tongue by shortening and thickening, located on ventral surface of tongue, runs in longitudinal direction
Genioglossus Action: protrusion of tongue, assists in preventing tongue from sinking back and obstructing respiration
Hyoglossus Action: depresses the tongue
Styloglossus Action: retract and move the tongue superiorly and posteriorly
What are the muscles of the soft palate? palatoglossus, levator veli palatini, and tensor veli palatini
Palatoglossus Action: elevates base of tongue. forms anterior and posterior pillars and also tonsils
Levator Veli Palatini Action: raises soft palate. involved w/ altitude and ear popping
Tensor Veli Palatini Action: tenses and slightly lowers soft palate
Where do extrinsic muscles originate and insert? origins are outside the tongue, insertions are inside the tongue
