figurative language writing or speech that is not meant to be taken literally
syntax the grammatical arrangement of words in sentences; word order
style the sum of the choices a writer makes as to the selection of the words and the type of sentence structure (diction + syntax)
rhetorical purpose (function) the strategy of using words effectively in speaking and writing. effective depends of the writer's purpose
assertion a statement or declaration, often takes the form of a thesis
anecdote a story or episode that illustrates a point
antithesis a contrast or opposition of thoughts, usually in 2 phrases, clauses, or sentences (you are going; i am staying)
euphemism a less direct/offensive word or phrase substituted for one that is direct or offensive (die = pass away)
informal describes a personal rather than a formal, rhetorical style
circumlocution a round about, indirect way of saying something (he is not exactly my friend, rather than, he is my enemy)
parallel syntax 2 or more phrases, clauses, or sentences having the same grammatical structure (i can i saw i conquered)
diction word choice (abstract/concrete, formal/colloquial, general/specific, technical/common)
tone speaker's attitude towards her subject, audience, or herself; the emotion; attitude
evocation a calling or drawing forth, summoning, usually of mood or atmospheres (evoke their pasts)
understatement saying less than one means, or of saying what one means with less force than the occasion warrents
imagery representaion through language of sense experience
verbal irony say one thing but mean another
dramatic irony audience knows something the character doesnt
point of view a mental position from which things are viewed; perspective
narrative devices chronological order, flashback, frame...
narrative technique the style of telling the "story," even if the passage is nonfiction. Concentrate on the order of events and on their detail in evaluating a writer's technique.
persuasive devices Words with strong connotations; words that intensify the emotional effect
resources of language, rhetorical feature, rhetorical structure, stylistic devices linguistic techniques
sentence structure grammar
allusion passing reference or indirect mention
concrete detail a highly specific, particular, often real, actual or tangible detail; opposite of abstract
abstract detail ideas or concepts; not physically available to the senses
