Definitions

BoilsTender, inflamed areas of the skin that contain pus. Appear as nodular, localized lesions that are painful and usual drain pus.
CarbunclesDeep, broad, swollen, erythemous follicular masses. Caused by infections such as boils that extend to the subcutaneous tissue. Appear as localized accumulations of pus and dead tissue and are associated with fever, chills, and malaise.
ImpetigoSuperficial bacterial skin infection seen most commonly in babies and children. It is common during hot and humid weather and usually caused by the same strain that causes strep throat.
ImpetigoAppears as one or more pimple-like lesions surrounded by reddened skin and often begins with small, fluid-filled vesicles that become pus-filled blisters that burst easily. Dry to form honey-colored crusty lesions.
Acne VulgarisInflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands and adjacent hair follicles and has several causes, including increased sebum production, abnormal keratinazation within the sebaceous glands, etc. Appease as comedones and pimples, especially on the face, back, and chest.
Acne RosaceaChronic inflammatory disorder that usually begins in the middle age or later and is characterized by vascular dilation of the central face, including nose, cheek, and eyelids and forehead. Appears as erythematous papules and pustules in the central areas of the face.
Tinea Fungal InfectionsA ring-shaped rash or central clearing surrounded by red, itchy, and scaly border characterizes this.
OncychomycosisAppears on the nails as a whitish, yellowish, or brownish discoloration that starts in the corner of the nail and moves to the entire nail bed. Results in thickened and brittle nails.
ScabiesCommonly appears between the fingers, wrists, elbows, buttocks, groin and scalp, and is characterized by severe itching that is often worse at night.
LiceAppears on the head or the body and is characterized by severe itching that could lead to secondary bacterial infection with continued scratching of the affected areas.
WartsHyperplastic epidermal lesions with a horny surface typically found on the plantar surfaces.
Decubitis UlcersA penetrating injury to the skin or deeper tissues that often become infected. Caused by poor nutrition, decreased circulation, lack of mobility, and constant pressure on the skin and tissue. Appear as deep, ulcerating wounds that are routinely colonized with microorganisms.
DermatitisAppears as a pruritic, erythematous rash.
EczemaAppears as a pruritic, erythematous rash and skin flaking. It is often accompanied by small blisters that weep and become crusted. Can lead to scaling, thickening, or discoloration of the skin.
PsoriasisChronic, inflammatory skin disorder characterized by recurrent exacerbations and remissions of thickened, erythemous, scaling lesions. Psoriatic epidermal cells proliferate at a rate sevenfold faster than normal epidermal cells.
