Early life for john de courcy
His ancestors came from normandy. They came to England with William the conqueror in 1066. His ancestors where also given land in somerset. John had no land of his own because he was so young in his family. joining Henry's army provided many opportunities for john-getting land,becoming rich and the king might reward them if they fought bravely. Henry had no yet rewarded John.

In 1177 John marched from dublin with 22 knights and 330 soldiers to downpatrick. The local king Rory MacDunlevy fled returning with a larger army but he was still defeated due to the normans superior armour and weapons. john conquered most of Down and Antrim and he became known as Princeps Ultoniae , master of Ulster
John knew he needed to strengthen his popularity to keep control. John had ruled ulster for 27 years and because price john (son of henry) was jealous of him he wanted him out of ireland. In 1189 henry II died and John became king of England. John started to plan his removal of de courcy in ireland. In 1204 hugh de lacy the king of meath invaded ulster under king john's orders. after a short was de courcy fled living the rest of his life in poverty in europe and de lacy was given the title earl of ulster. John de courcy left behind all of the castles he built which have great historical influence even today.
