Definitions

Chemical Reaction A process in which the physical and chemical properties of substances change as new substances with different physical and chemical properties are formed
Reactant A substance that enters a chemical reactions
Product A substance that is produced in a chemical reaction
Atoms When you write a formula for a covalent compound, you are showing how many (blank) of each element can be found in a molecule of the compound
Law of Conservation of Mass The (blank) says the mass must stay constant in a chemical reaction
Mass (blank) remains constant in a chemical reaction
Sythesis Two or more substances combine to form one new substance; Combination
Decomposition A complex substance breaks down into two or more simpler substances
Single Replacement An uncombined element replaces an element that is part of a compound
Double Replacement Different atoms in different compounds replace each other
Combustion The reaction of oxygen with a compound containing Hydrogen and Carbon (a hydrocarbon); energy is released as heat and light
Activation Energy The energy needed to start a chemical reaction
Exothermic A reaction in which energy is released. It is caused when the reactants have more energy than the products
Endothermic A reaction in which energy is absorbed. It is caused when the products have more energy than the reactants.
Reaction Rate How fast a chemical reaction takes place
Collision Theory States that a chemical reaction happens when particles collide at the correct angle and with enough energy. It relates particle collisions with reaction rates
Factors that affect Reaction Rate Temperature, Surface Area, Concentration, Catalysts
Temperature Amount of energy in a substance
Temperature A higher (blank) makes the particles move faster
Surface Area How many particles are on the surface of a substance
Concentration How much of a substance is in a certain volume
Catalyst A substance which changes the rate of a reaction
Catalyst A (blank) is not changed in a reaction
Evidence of Chemical Change Color changes, heat content changes, a gas is produced, a precipitate forms
