Definitions

Ablation removal of a part, pathway, or function by surgery, chemical destruction, electrocautery, freezing, or radiofrequency (RF)
Anastomosis Surgical joining of two ducts, vessels, or bowel segments to allow flow from one to another
Cheiloplasty plastic surgery on the lip
Hernia Weakness in the muscle of the diaphragm or abdominal wall. The intestine bulges through the defect. There is swelling and pain. There is an inherited tendency to herinas, but hernias can also be caused by pregnancy, obesity, or heavy lifting.
Adhesions Fibrous bands that form after abdominal surgery. They bind intestines to each other or to other organs. They can bind so tightly that peristalsis and intestinal function are affected.
Steatorrhea Greasy, frothy, foul-smelling feces that contain undigested fats. There is not enough of the enzyme lipase because of the pancreatic disease or cystic fibrosis.
Peritonitis Inflammation and infection of the peritoneum. It occurs when ucler, diverticulum, or cancerous tumor eats through the wall of the stomach or intestines or when an inflamed appendix ruptures. Drainage and bacteria spill into the abdominopelvic cavity.
Ascites Accumulation of ascitic fluid in the abdominopelvic cavity. Liver disease and congestive heart failure cause a backup of blood. This increases the blood pressure in the viens of the abdomen. This pressure pushes fluid out of the blood and into the abdominopelvic cavity.
Hepatitis Inflammationand infection of the liver from the hepatitis virus. There is weakness, anorexia, nausea, fever, dark urine, and jaundice. Also known as Viral Hepatitis.
Hepatomegaly Enlargement of the liver due to cirrhosis, hepatitis or cancer. The enlarged liver can be felt on palpation of the abdomen. The degree of enlargement is measured as the number of fingerbreadths from the edge of the right rib cage to the inferior edge of the liver.
BilirubinTest for unconjugated, conjugated, and total bilirubin levels. These levels are abnormal when there is liver disease or gallstones. Conjugated bilirubin is also known as direct bilirubin because it reacts directly with the reagent used to perform the lab test. Unconjugated bilirubin and indirect bilirubin only reacts when another substance is added to the reagent.
Alkaline Phosphatase Test for the enzyme alkaline phosphatase that is found in both liver cells and bone cells. An elevated blood level is due to liver disease or bone disease.
Cholangiography a radiographic examination of the bile ducts with the use of a contrast medium
Appendectomy surgical removal of the appendix
Biopsy Procedure to remove a small piece of tissue from an ucler, polyp, mass, or tumor to look for abnormal or cancerous cells.
Colonostomy Surgical creation of an opening of some portion of the colon through the abdominal wall to the outside surface. Fecal material drains into a bag worn on the abdomen.
Endoscopy Procedure that uses an endoscpe ( a flexible, fiberoptic scope with a magnifying lens and a light source)nto internally examine the gastrointestinal tract. An endoscopic procedure can be coupled with another procedure such as a biopsy or removal of a polyp.
Gastrostomy Procedure to create a temporary or permanent opening from the abdominal wall into the stomach to insert a feeding tube.
Herniorrhaphy surgical repair of a hernia
Polypectomy surgical removal of a polyp from the colon using forceps.
Lingual Frenulum Fold of mucous membrane that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth
Rhinoplasty Plastic surgery of the nose.
Choledochotomy Incision of the common bile duct
Hemorrhoids Swollen, painful rectal veins; often a result of constipation
Colonoscopy Visualization and examination of the entire colon after the colonscope is passed through the rectum.
Sigmoidoscopy Visualization and examination of the rectum and sigmoid colon using a sigmoidoscope.
Proctosigmoidoscopy visual examination of the anus, rectum and sigmoid with an endoscope
Pharyngostomy Surgical creation of an artificial opening into the pharynx
Pharyngoplasty surgical repair of the pharynx
Vermilionectomy Surgical removal of the vermilion border of the lip.
