Definitions

Platysma Action: raises skin of the neck and also pulls the corner of mouth down, tenses and ridges skin of neck, depresses lower jaw and lip. Most superficial muscle of neck
Sternocleidomastoid Action: draws head toward shoulder and rotates, flexion of head. One of largest and most superficial cervical muscles. Can palpate it, divides neck region into triangles.
Digastric Action: raises hyoid bone and base of tongue, steadies hyoid bone, depresses mandible. Assists in forming triangles of neck.
Mylohyoid Action: elevates hyoid bone or depresses mandible, also forms floor of mouth. Submandibular gland between angle of mandible and mylohyoid.
Stylohyoid Action: elevates hyoid bone and base of tongue
Geniohyoid Action: elevates hyoid bone and tongue and depresses mandible
Sternothyroid Action: depresses the thyroid cartilage and larynx
Sternohyoid Action: depresses larynx and hyoid bone, steadies hyoid bone. Superficial to sternocleidomastoid
Omohyoid Action: steadies hyoid bone, depresses and retracts hyoid and larynx
Thyrohyoid Action: depresses the hyoid and raises the thyroid cartilage and larynx
What are the posterior neck muscles? Trapezius, Semispinalis Capitus, Splenius Capitus and Splenius Cervicus
Trapezius shapes posterior aspect of neck, lifts the clavicle and scapula and extends head and neck
Semispinalis Capitus deep to trapezius. extends the neck and laterally flexes, antagonistic action of sternocleidomastoid
Splenius Capitus immediately deep to trapezius. extends neck, turns head to same side, antagonistic action of sternocleidomastoid
Splenius Cervicus lateral and inferior to splenius. extends the neck, turns head to same side, antagonistic action of sternocleidomastoid
Suprahyoid Muscles are: above the hyoid bone
Infrahyoid Muscles are: below the hyoid bone
Suprahyoid Muscles elevate hyoid, depress mandible
What are the suprahyoid muscles? digastric, geniohyoid, mylohyoid, stylohyoid
Infrahyoid muscles elevate or depress larynx
What are the infrahyoid muscles? sternohyoid, omohyoid, sternothyroid, thyrohyoid
Anterior Triangle and Posterior Triangle are divided by: sternocleidomastoid muscle
Anterior Triangle is composed of: submental triangle, submandibular triangle, muscular triangle, carotid triangle
Posterior Triangle is composed of: occipital triangle and supraclavicular triangle
Submental Triangle between anterior bellies of digastric, tip of chin
Submandibular Triangle bordered by mylohyoid, hyoglossus, stylohyoid and digastric
Muscular Triangle infrahyoid region area below omohyoid
Carotid Triangle omohyoid, sternocleidomastoid and digastric
Occipital Triangle trapezius, sternocleidomastoid, omohyoid muscle
Supraclavicular Triangle above clavicle, omohyoid and trapezius muscle
