Example of a functionWhen we think of a function, we generally think of a formula. As an example, the speed in feet per second of the space shuttle Atlantis t seconds after launch can be modeled by the quadratic function

S(t) = 0.0002t3 - 0.076t2 + 38.731t + 837.53.

This represents a function because for any value of t there is only one value of S. In this example, t is the independent variable and S is the dependent variable.
Piece-wise function A piece-wise function is a single function made up of pieces of other functions.
