Function | A function is a rule between two sets of numbers where each number in the first set, called the domain, is related to ONE number in the second set, called the range. (x-variable, independent variable, input variable). Is expressed as f of x, or f(x) |
Example of a function | When we think of a function, we generally think of a formula. As an example, the speed in feet per second of the space shuttle Atlantis t seconds after launch can be modeled by the quadratic function S(t) = 0.0002t3 - 0.076t2 + 38.731t + 837.53. This represents a function because for any value of t there is only one value of S. In this example, t is the independent variable and S is the dependent variable. |
Piece-wise function | A piece-wise function is a single function made up of pieces of other functions. |
