binomial nomenclature system where each species is assigned a two-part scientific name
scientific name the first part of the name is the genus to which a species belongs, and the second part is unique to each species.
systematics the science of naming and grouping organisms
taxa/ taxon (sing.) groups of biological meaning created through systematics
kingdom the largest and most inclusive of Linnaeus's taxonomic categories. All multicellular animals are places in the Kingdom Animalia.
phylum/phyla classes of organisms that are different but share important characteristics. (class Aves, Amphibia, Reptilia, & Chordata)
class similar orders that are grouped in the next largest rank (the order Artiodactyla is placed in the class Mammalia)
