How do you differentiate between an extrinsic and intrinsic muscle of the hand?

Extrinsic muscles have their origin in the forearm, while Intrinsic muscle have their origin in the hand

What are the 5 compartments of the hand? starting from central compartment and going clockwise around a supinate cross section of the right hand

1) Central 2) Thenar 3) Adductor 4) Interosseus 5) Hypothenar

What muscles are in the central compartment?

The lumbricals

What muscles are in the thenar compartment? starting from flexor pollicis brevis and going clockwise around a supinated cross section of the right thumb

Flexor pollicis brevis, Abductor pollicis brevis an Opponens pollicis

What muscles are in the adductor compartment?

Adductor pollicis

What muscles are in the interosseous compartment?

4 dorsal interossei and 3 palmar interossei

What muscles are in the hypothenar compartment? Starting from flexor digiti minimi and going anticlockwise around a supinated cross section of the right hand

Flexor digiti minimi, abductor digiti minimi and opponens digiti minimi

What are the similarities and differences between the 1st/2nd lumbricals and the 3rd/4th lumbricals?

Both originate from tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus and insert into extensor expansions on the lateral side of fingers, But only the 1st and 2nd lumbricals are unipennate, the 3rd and 4th lumbricals are bipennate.

What is the difference between flexor/abductor pollicis brevis and opponens pollicis?

Both originate from flexor retinaculum and tubercules of scaphoid and trapezium, but the opponens pollicis attaches to the lateral 1st metacarpal instead of the lateral phalanx of the thumb

How do you differentiate between the adductor pollicis transverse and oblique heads?

Transverse resembles a triangle that only attaches to 3rd metacarpal, while oblique attaches to base of 2nd and 3rd metacarpal as well as the trapezoid and capitate

What is the difference between the dorsal and palmar interossei?

The dorsal interossei are bipennate muscles between all metacarpals, while the palmar interossei are unipennate muscles on the 2nd,4th and 5th digit

What is the difference between the abductor digiti minimi and the flexor digiti minimi and the opponens digitii?

Both abductor/flexor digiti minimi attach to the phalanx, while the opponens digit attaches to metacarpal, but the abductor digiti minimi also attaches to pisiform instead of the hook of hamate and flexor retinaculum
