30 terms

dependent variable

the outcome factor; the variable that may change in response to manipulations of the independent variable

independent variable

the experimental factor that is manipulated; the variable whose effect is being studied

control group

in an experiment, a group that serves as a standard of comparison with another group to which the control group is identical except for one factor

controlled variables

variables in an experiment that are kept the same throughout the experiment.

constants

conditions that stay the same in the experiment

uncontrolled variables

the things that are not kept the same in an experiment

experimental group

in an experiment, the group that is exposed to the treatment, that is, to one version of the independent variable.

bar graph

a type of graph in which the lengths of bars are used to represent and compare data in categories

pie graph

a graph that best shows part of a whole

line graph

A graph that uses line segments to show changes that occur over time

problem

a question raised for consideration or solution

exercise

a task performed or problem solved in order to develop skill or understanding

model

the act of representing something (usually on a smaller OR larger scale)

concept map

A graphic organizer that shows a proposition and support or problem and solution relationship.

critical thinking

involves using knowledge and thinking skills to evaluate evidence and explanations

scientific method

a method of investigation involving observation and theory to test scientific hypotheses

hypothesis

possible explanation for a set of observations or possible answer to a scientific question

qualitative data

descriptive data; Information describing color, odor, shape, or some other physical characteristic

numerical data

data

a collection of facts from which conclusions may be drawn

experiment

the act of conducting a controlled test or investigation

conclusion

a position or opinion or judgment reached after consideration

problem

a question raised for consideration or solution

continuous data

Possible values form an entire interval along the number line; data that connects/relates to each other data point; change over time; line graph data

discontinuous data

A collection of data or facts that are not connected or are not continuous; one set of data does not connect or depend on another set of data; have only a certain number of values; bar graph and pie graph information

good data table title

Data table of showing/of data that is on the x axis (IV) and data that is on the y-axis (DV)

good scientific graph title

Type of graph showing/of data that is on the y axis (DV) vs. data that is on the x axis (IV)

graph

a drawing illustrating the relations between certain quantities plotted with reference to a set of axes

data table

A chart of rows and columns for recording information.

variables

factors that can change in an experiment
