It lasted three days, and it was considered the deadliest battle in the Civil War.
In 1864, Ulysses S. Grant was appointed general of all the Union armies. The Union marched from Tennessee to Georgia. They planned to capture the Cofederate capital.
Appomattox Court House
Lee met Grant to surrender here. Grant wrote out the terms of surrender, and Lee signed.
He was a congressman first, and he was part of a political party against slavery. . He was the President during the Civil war.He also went to Gettysburg to dedicate a Union cementary where many soldiers had been killed while serving as president.

Missouri wanted to join the Union army as a slave state. That would upst the balance between free states and slave states. Henry Clay suggested that Missouri be admited to the Union, and Main as a free state. Slavery would be legal south of the Missouri border. Slavery isn't allowed north of the border.
Compromise of 1850
California joined the Union as a free state and other lands gained from Mexico wold be allowed to choose if slavery should be allowed. Under the compromise, a law was also passed where all Americans had to turn in people who escaped as slaves.
An escape route for slaves to go from the south to the north of the USA or Canada. They were trying to escape from slavery.
It was an island near Charleston, South Carolina, that still remained in the Union hands. The Confederacy leaders attacked Fort Sumter before the supply ship arrived.

They had advanced industry, railroad system, and a strong navy
Advantages of the South
They had a large number of military leaders. They were familiar with the southern environment and were experienced with outdoor living.
It is regional loyalty. .Sectionalism became a serious issue.Congress passed a high tariff, or a tax on imports. The tariff helped protect Northern factory owners. It made imported goods more expensive than goods made in the USA.So there was great amount of tension between sections of the USA for economic and cultural reasons.
