Confederacy The southern states that seceded from the United States in 1861
Compromise of 1850 Settled the arguments with the North and South for a little while, and called for new requirements for slavery. Ex. California was admitted as a free state to the Union.
Fugitive Slave Law Denied slaves the right to a jury trial, anyone helping a slave escape could be fined and jailed, slave catchers were paid to bring slaves back.
Uncle Tom's Cabin A best-seller tale of the brutal treatment of a plantation slave who is beaten to death, caused anger to rise in the North
Kansas-Nebraska Act All started over building a railroad, turned into another crisis over slavery in different parts of the U.S.
Dred Scott Descision Stated that African Americans had no right to a trial, and that they were not citizens. Also said that the Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional, since slaves are property.
Bleeding Kansas A 3-year long fight over slavery out West, where proslavery and antislavery forces clashed over if slavery should be allowed in the territory.
Secede To break away from the United States
Harpers Ferry Raid When John Brown broke into a federal arsenal, planning to steal weapons and give them to escaped slaves to start a revolt in the South.
Popular Sovereignty The right to decide for themselves whether to allow slavery.
States' rights The idea that states may nullify federal laws.
Fort Sumter A federal fort in South Carolina, a fight broke out in 1861 and the Confederacy gained control of the Fort.
Republican Party Committed itself to antislavery issues, took stands against the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the Fugitive Slave Law.
Abraham Lincoln First Republican President, did not support slavery
Harriet Beecher Stowe Wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin, wanted to impact people with the evil treatment of slaves
Stephen Douglas Proposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, ran in the 1860 election, Democrat
Zachary Taylor Opponent of compromise, died in office
John Brown A passionate abolitionist, encouraged violence, went to great measures to try and stop slavery.
Henry Clay When the Senate met to discuss slavery, he proposed that California was admitted as a free state, but not restricting slavery in the other territories gained from Mexico. He also proposed a more agressive fugitive slave law.
Jefferson Davis The elected President of the Souther Confederate States of America.
