Cocci Prokaryote shape which is mainly spherical
Bacilli Prokaryote shape which is mainly rod shaped
Spiral Prokaryote shape which is mainly spirally shaped. Spirilla are stiff and spirochetes are flexible.
Coccobacillus A mixture of cocci and vacillu shsape and is difficult to ell if its one or ther other
Binary fissionMost common form of asexual reproduction for prokaryotes. 1. Cell replicates its DNA. 2. Cell grows and moves daughter molecules of DNA apart. 3. Cell forms a cross wall which invaginates the cytoplasmic membrane. 4. Cross wall divides daughter cells. 5. Daughter cells seperate or may not. Parental cell dissappers with the formation of progeny.
Diplococci Cocci that remain attached in pairs after binary fission
Streptococci Long chains of cocci remained attached after binary fission.
Tetrad Cocci which divides in two planes and remain attached
Sarcinae Cocci which divide in three planes for form cuboidal packets
Staphylococci Cocci with random cell divisions and look like a bunch of grapes.
Palisade Basilli in which daughter cells remain attached to form V shapes and side by side arrangement
ArcheaProkaryote different from bacteria. Characterisitics: Lack true peptidoglycan in their cell walls, cell membrane lipids have branched hydrovarbon chains, initial amino acid in polypeptide chain is methionine (N-formylmethionine is used in bacteria).
Three phyla: Crenarchaeota, Euryarchaeota, and Korarchaeota. None are known to cause diseases.
Extremophiles archea that require extreme conditions of temperature, pH, or salinity to survive. (Thermophiles and halophiles)
Thermophiles DNA, RNA, cytoplasmic membranes, and proteins do not funtion properly at temperatures lower than 45 degree celcius. Hyperthermophiles require temps over 80 celcius.
HalophilesInhabit extremely saline habitiats such as dead sea, great salt lake, and solar evaporation ponds that are used to concentrate salt for use in seasoning and production of fertilizer. Can also colonize and spoil foods such as salted fish, sausages, and pork. Concentraion of NaCl has to be greater than 9% to maintain cell wall integrity.
Methanogens Convert CO2, H2, and organic acids into methane gas (CH4). Largest known group of archaea.
