CPU | Central processing unit - like the "brain" of the computer |
Data file | Contains the data the user has created using a program file |
Program file | Contains the instructions to run the software and create the data file. Also called and application |
Interactive operating system | The computer system reacts to user requests immediately and processes the necessary data |
Real-time OS | this operating system reacts to the user's input immediately and updates the system straight away. Used eg for on-line shopping, banking, booking hotels or flights |
HCI | Human computer interface - the way the user and teh computer communicate |
File management | Allows user to create files, store them in directories, and control access to these files. IT remembers where files have been stored |
Memory management | Ensure there is enough memory to store files. Loads files into the computers memory |
Error reporting | If something goes wrong the user will be given a message to inform them. |
Device drivers | These are needed to allow computers to communicate effectively with the peripherals |
hierarchical filing system | A filing system where a root directory contains sub-directories which themselves can contain further sub-directories and so on. |
Sequential access | Data must be accessed in the order it was created |
Random access | Data can be accessed in any order |
