Herbs that Clear Heat and Dry Dampness and Herbs that Clear Heat and Resolve Toxicity

Zi Cao

Actions & Indications
1. Clears heat, cools the blood, and resolves fire toxicity while venting rashes: encouraging rashes to surface, encourage complete expression of rash, moisten the intestines, promote urination; esp. for rashes accompanied by constipation or urinary dysfunction
2. Clears damp-heat from the skin: damp heat lesions, vaginal itching, and burns

Huang Qin

Actions & Indications
1. Clears heat and drains dampness: damp-heat in ST or Intestines w/ diarrhea or dysenteric disorder; Sx of flu, fever, thirst but can't drink; damp-heat in lower burner w/ Lin; damp-heat in GB causing jaundice
2. Clears heat, resolves toxicity and reduces fever: Qi level illness w/ fever, irritability, thirst, cough, and expectoration of thick yellow sputum d/t LU heat or sores and swelling d/t heat
3. Clears heat and stops bleeding: vomiting or coughing blood, nosebleed, or blood in stool
4. Clears heat and calms the fetus: pregnancy w/ heat condition
5. Sedates ascending LV yang: HA, irritability, red eyes, flushed face and bitter taste

Huang Lian

Actions & Indications
1. Clears heat and drains dampness: damp-heat in ST or Intestines w/ diarrhea or dysenteric disorders; vomiting and/or acid reflux d/t ST heat
2. Drains fire, resolves fire toxicity, and drains HT fire: high fever, irritability, disorientation, red tongue, rapid and full pulse; heat from excess w/ painful red eyes, sore throat, boils, carbuncles and abscesses; ST heat resulting in wasting and thirsting
3. Clears heat and stops bleeding: nosebleed, blood in urine, stool or vomit
4. Clears heat topically: red painful eyes, ulcerations of the tongue and mouth

Huang Bai

Actions & Indications
1. Drains damp-heat from the lower burner: vaginal discharge, foul smelling diarrhea, or dysenteric disorder; leg qi w/ Sx of red swollen knees, legs or feet; jaundice or Lin syndrome
2. Drains KD fire: steaming bone disorder, night sweats, afternoon fevers, and sweating, nocturnal emissions and spermatorrhea
3. Drains fire and resolves fire toxicity: sores and damp lesions of the skin (can be used topically)

Long Dan Cao

Actions & Indications
1. Drains damp-heat from LV and GB channels: sore throat and eyes, swollen and painful ears, or sudden deafness; jaundice, pain, swelling, dampness in genital area or foul smelling vaginal discharge and itching
2. Drains and pacifies excessive LV fire: LV fire blazing w/ HA or red eyes

Ku Shen

Actions & Indications
1. Clears heat and dries dampness: jaundice, dysenteric disorder, vaginal discharge and sores
2. Disperses wind, kills parasites, and stops itching: skin lesions w/ chronic itching, seepage, and bleeding; also for genital itching and vaginal discharge; both internal or topical
3. Clears heat and promotes urination: Lin and hot edema

Qin Pi

Actions & Indications
1. Clears heat, resolves toxicity and dries dampness: diarrhea, dysenteric disorder, and vaginal discharge
2. Drains LV fire and benefits the eyes: red swollen and painful eyes, or superficial visual obstruction
3. Disperses wind-dampness: Bi syndrome
4. Calms wheezing and stops cough: wheezing and cough

Jin Yin Hua

Actions & Indications
1. Clears heat and resolves fire toxicity: hot painful sores and swellings, esp. of breast, throat or eyes; also for intestinal abscesses
2. Vents and disperses externally contracted wind-heat: early stages of wind-heat
3. Clears damp-heat from the lower burner: damp-heat dysenteric disorders

Lian Qiao

Actions & Indications
1. Clears heat and resolves toxicity: externally contracted wind-heat
2. Reduces abscesses and dissipates clumps: sores, internal abscesses, scrofula, or throat Bi syndrome

Ban Lan Gen

Actions & Indications
1. Drains heat, resolves fire toxicity, cools the blood, benefits the throat: epidemics and flu w/ fever, HA, throat pain; mumps; jaundice

Da Qing Ye

Actions & Indications
1. Clears heat, resolves fire toxicity: severe contagious diseases and wind-heat in exterior; fire toxins anywhere in body expressed as mouth ulcers and throat Bi
2. Cools the blood, dissipates maculae: skin eruptions d/t heat in blood s/ high fever, irritability and loss of consciousness; vomiting blood

Qing Dai

Actions & Indications
1. Clears heat, resolves toxicity, cools the blood, and reduces maculae: for maculae and nosebleeds
2. Clears heat, resolves toxicity, cools the blood, and reduces swelling: swollen and painful throat, sore of the mouth, or mumps; topically or internal
3. Drains LV fire, dispels summerheat, and extinguishes wind to stop tremors: convulsions, red eyes, sore throat
4. Clears LV fire, drains LU heat: for cough and chest pain d/t LV fire accosting the LU

Lu Dou

Actions & Indications
1. Clears summerheat: irritability and fever, esp. w/ thirst
2. Clears heat and resolves toxicity: toxic sores and swellings; can be ground to powder
3. Antidote: for poisoning d/t Zhi Fu Zi
