Definitions

matter anything that has mass and takes up space
physical property can be observed without changing a substance into another substance (softness, color, malleability, etc...))
chemical property describes the ability of a substance to change into a different substance (flammability, reactivity, etc...)
element a pure substance that cannot be broken down into any other substance by chemical or physical means.
atom the basic particle of an element.
molecule a particle formed when two or more atoms are held together by chemical bonds.
mixture is two or more substances that are together in the same place but are not chemically combined.
homogeneous describes a mixture where substances evenly mixed throughout... example - a solution
heterogeneous describes a mixture that is not evenly mixed, i.e. concrete, salad
weight a measure of the force of gravity on an object
mass measurement of how much matter an object contains
volume the amount of space that matter takes up
density a measurement that relates the volume and mass of an object
endothermic a chemical change in which energy is taken in, or absorbed
exothermic a chemical change of energy that releases or gives off energy
solid a kind of matter that has a fixed shape and a fixed volume
liquid a kind of matter that has a definite volume but no definite shape
gas a kind of matter that easily changes volume and shape.
melting the change in state from solid to liquid
freezing the change in state from liquid to solid
boiling the change in state from liquid to gas
evaporation the change in state from liquid to gas
Condensation the change in state from gas to liquid
Boyle's Law pressure and volume of a gas are inversely related (under constant temperature)
Charles' Law temperature and volume of a gas are positively related (under constant pressure)
