Definitions

nucleus the center of an atom and contains most of the atom's mass
proton positive charge and is located inside the nucleus
neutron no charge and is located inside the nucleus
electron negative charge and is located outside of the nucleus
Dalton atoms; gave us the modern atomic theory and said that atoms are solid spheres, atoms of the same element are exactly alike and that atoms of different elements can be combined to form compounds
Thomson electrons; said that negatively charged electrons were stuck to the sphere and that the atom was neutral, so there must be positive charges somewhere
Rutherford protons; said that positive charges are called protons and that protons are located in the nucleus, where most of the atoms mass is
Bohr planetary model; said that electrons move around the nucleus in energy levels and its called the planetary model because the e- orbit the nucleus like the planets orbit the sun
Electron Cloud Model modern day; electrons move around the nucleus in energy levels in an ever changing path and that the neutrons are located in the nucleus and are neutral
metals, metalloids, and non-metals 3 types of elements on the periodic table
metals located to the left of the zig-zag line and are malleable, good conductors, ductile, shiny, mostly solids, ect.
non-metals located to the right of the zig-zag line and are not malleable are not good conductors, aren't ductile, no luster, ect.
metalloids border the zig-zag line and have properties of both metals and non-metals
atomic number written above the symbol and tells us the number of protons and electrons
atomic mass tells us the sum of the protons and the neutrons
C carbon
O oxygen
H hydrogen
N nitrogen
P phosphorus
S sulfur
Si silicon
Au gold
Ag silver
Hg mercury
Al aluminum
Mg magnesium
Ca calcium
F flourine
