Exploited | is to use a person or a group of people for your own gain often hurting the person exploited(Ex. The "hut tax" that the people of certain European colonies in Africa were made to pay by harvesting rubber because they didn't have foreign money or a concept of taxes). |
Anglo Saxon race | an ethnic group where the British are from. They thought they were the best |
forced labour | to force someone to work for you often by exploiting them |
paternalism | when a different country takes control of a country to "help them." |
Scramble for Africa | when quinine was discovered (etc.) and several European countries flooded into Africa looking for colonies and eventually started bumping into each other |
Berlin conference | the boundaries of africa were drawn so a war over Africa didn't break out; No Africans were present |
Refugee | Is a person who leaves there homeland because of persecution or natural disaster etc. They wind up outside of their home territory. |
Coup d état | the sudden violent overthrow of a government usually by a small group of insiders. |
Kinyarwanda | the language of native Rwandans |
Twa | came to Rwanda about 800 B.C.E make one percent of population(Warriors, assassins) |
Hutu | came in the 1300's to Rwanda make 85 percent of population(farmers) |
Tutsi | came 1400's to 1500's make 14 percent of Rwanda(herders) once considered "superior race" |
genocide | when you eliminate or try to eliminate a particular ethnic group |
Afrikaans | the language of Dutch descendants in South Africa |
Afrikaners | Descendants of Dutch settlers in South Africa |
Apartheid | A set of laws in South Africa to keep the races separate |
Boers | The Dutch name for Farmers. When Afrikaners fought the British the late 1800's (and very early 1900's) the English called the two conflicts the "Boer Wars" |
ANC | African National Congress--a group that formed to end the racist regime of South Africa. They emphasized non-violent approaches. |
Cold War | A time period (1945-1990) during which the U.S. and USSR were enemies. It didn't come to open warfare because the weapons both countries had at their disposal (nuclear) were too scary to use. |
