occurs after the last quarter moon, and before the new moon. (lighted on the left side.)
new moon
where the moon is not reflecting light
waxing crescent
The Moon appears to be partely but lesss taht one-half illuminated by direct sunlight. The fraction of the Moon's disk that is illuminated is increasing. (the right side has been lighted up)
first quarter
when you can see half of the sunlit side of the moon(right side)
waxing gibbous
The moon is moving toward the full moon phase, and presently more than a quarter of it is visible on Earth.( missing some off the left)
