Chivington Massacre | A shooting in 1864 which included Colonel John Chivington and his militia who fought against a Cheyenne village. The Native Americans fought back and ended up killing all of Chivington's army. This marked the beginning of the war. |
Reservation | Are pieces of land set aside for Native Americans that is not supposed to be tampered with, or invaded by the whites. |
Battle of Little Big Horn | - A battle that took place in June of 1876 in which Colonel Custer led a bunch of soldiers into the Little Bighorn Valley, they were sent by the federal government to protect the miners. They prepared an attack, and the Lakota's and Cheyenne's camped ahead and out numbered them about 4 to 1. They slaughtered all of the men. |
Chief Joseph | a Native American who fled with about 500 Nez Perces. They led to Canada, but unfortunately they had to surrender after marching for about to 1000 miles. |
Ghost Dance | A Dance that meant that the Great Spirits would make a new world for his people, free of whites and filled with buffalo and their ancestors, all the Indians had to do was the Ghost Dance. The whites felt that it was dangerous and a call for war, so police officers made them stop it. |
Dawes Act | An act that encouraged Native Americans to become farmers, they were forced to farm it for 5 years, but after that period of time, many Native Americans sold their land to whites for low prices. |
Wounded Knee | The massacre at wounded knee occurred because groups of Lakota's fled their reservations after Sitting Bull's death. Army troops followed them to Wounded Knee Creek. The Indians were preparing to surrender, but all of a sudden, a shot rang out and the army opened fire and killed 300 Native Americans. |
Cattle Drive | A time periods in which Texas Ranchers rounded up herds of longhorns. They drove longhorns hundreds of miles north to railroad lines in Kansas and Missouri to which then they can be shipped off.. |
Cow Town | Towns in which after cattle drives, the cattle's were held in pens until they could be loaded into railroad cars and shipped to markets in the east. After the cowboys brought their cows to the cow towns, they would need a place to stay and eat, so huge cow towns sprung up all around Kansas and Missouri that had restaurants and inns. |
Comstock Lode | A period in time when two miners struck gold in Sierra Nevada. Another miner named Henry Comstock claimed that the land was his, and boasted to everyone that it was his. From then on, the strike was know as the Comstock Lode. |
Subsidy | A Financial aid or a land grant from the government. It's pretty much a loan with land. |
Transcontinental Railroad | A railroad that stretches across a continent from coast to coast. It went all the way from San Francisco across the nation. |
Promontory, Utah | A train stop along the that marked the end of the Union Pacific Railroad, and the beginning of the Central Pacific Railroad. |
Exodusters | The African Americans who moved to Kansas after Reconstruction because their freedom's slowly start to go away. |
Sod House | Houses that were built out of sod because their was little wood in the Great Plains. Sod Houses often leaked. |
National Grange | - A group of farmers who wanted to boost farm profits and reduce the rates that railroads charged for shipping grain. The farmers pooled their money to buy seeds and tools at wholesale. |
Inflation | Inflation means increased prices. It was feared that inflation would ruin the economy. |
Boomers | A group who were seeking to get free land in Oklahoma. They lined up and waited until noon of April 22, 1889. |
Sooners | A group who were also seeking to get free land in Oklahoma, but instead of waiting until April 22, 1889, they snuck into Oklahoma before the official opening and had staked out the best land. |
Homestead Act | encouraged farmers to migrate west because it gave them 160 acres of free land, and you just had to pay a small fee and had to farm it for 5 years, and once the 5 years was up, the land was yours. |
