max oxidation number of most atoms in its compounds is

equal to its periodic group number

min oxidation number of hydrogen is

-1

min number for nonmetallic atom is

equal to its group number minus 8

min number for metallic atom is

0

oxidation number of every monatomic ion is

equal to its charge

oxidation number of every alkali and alkaline earth metal is

equal to its group number

oxidation number of hydrogen in compounds is +1 except

when hydrogen is combined with active metals

oxidation number of halogens is -1 except

for a Cl, Br, or I atom combined with oxygen or a halogen atom higher in the periodic table
