Definitions

autonomic nervous system nerves that control involuntary body functions of muscles, glands, and internal organs
sympathetic nervous system
parasympathetic nervous system
Major effects of the sympathetic nervous systemincrease in cardiac rate and output*
constriction of blood vessels in skin and viscera*
elevation of blood pressure*
elevation of blood glucose*
relaxation of smooth muscle in bronchi
decrease in peristalsis
tightening of sphincters
promotion of urinary retention
Dilation of pupils
Note: * these are emergency reactions of the body.
Major effects of the parasympathetic nervous system Decrease in cardia rate and output
Dilation of blood vessels in skin and viscera
Lowering of blood prussure
No effects on blood glucose
Constriction of smooth muscle in bronchi
Increases peristalsis
Relaxtion of sphincters
Decrease in urinary retention
Constriction of pupils
Sympathomimetic (Adrenergic) Agents epinephrine (Adrenalin, Epi-pen)
metarminol (Aramine)
norepinephrine injection (Levophed)
phenylephrine (Neo-Synephrine)
Sympatholytic (Adrenergic blocking) Agents atenolon (Tenormin)
clonidine (Catapres)
prazosin (Minipress)
propranolol (Inderal)
Ergot Alkaloids ergotamine (Gymergen)
Parasympathomimetic (Cholinergic) Agents *bethanechol (Urecholine) similar in action to acetycholine but less active and less toxic.
*neostigmine (Prostigmin)
*pilocarpine
Belladonna atropine (Atropen)
Atropine poisoning first indication is headache, dryness of throat and skin, dilated pupils, and dimness of vision. Skin is flushed and a rash may appear. Temp increases and pulse is rapid.
Atropine poisoning Antidote Gastric lavage along with parasympathomimetic drugs such as pilocarpine or tannic acid (tea).
Neuromuscular Blocking agents succinylcholine (Anectine)- relaxes the body.
