Plasma Membrane Cell membrane acts as a selective barrier, thereby regulating the cell's chemical composition. Composed of a phospholipid bilayer within which proteins are embeded.
Cytoplasm Cellular region between nuclear and plasma membranes. Contains cytosol, inclusions and organelles
Mitochondria Rodlike organelle. Powerhouse. Site of ATP synthesis (Energy)
Ribosomes Dense particle composed of RNA and protein. Site of protein synthesis.
Endoplasmic reticulum Membrane system found in a cell's cytoplasm Assists in the production, processing, and transport of proteins and lipids. Can be rough (Ribosome studded) or smooth(complex functions)
Golgi apparatus Stack of smooth membrane sacs close to nucleus. Modifies and packages protein for export from cell.
Lysosomes Membranous sacs. Site of intracellular digestion. Contains enzymes.
Cytoskeleton Protein fibers that hold the cell together and keep its shape, Aids in intracellular and extracellular movement. Consists of microfilaments, microtubules and intermediate filaments.
Nucleus Largest Organelle - control centre of cell. Contains DNA and RNA and has its own membrane.
Centrioles Paired cylindrical bodies composed of microtubules. Involved in Mitosis
Cillia Short, hair like, plasma membrane extensions made of microtubules. Move substances in one direction across cell membrane
Flagella Single, long whip-like projections that move cells eg tails in spermatazoa. Formed of microtubules on cell surface.
