Government The institutions and processes through which public policies are made for a society
Public Goods Goods, such as clean air and clean water, that everyone must share
Politics This determines who we choose as our governmental leaders and what policies we want them to pursue.
Political Participation The ways in which people get involved in politics
Single- Issue Groups Groups so concerned about one issue, they vote solely based on that issue alone, ignoring the candidates other issues.
Policymaking System The way our government responds to the priorities of its people
Linkage Institutions Transmit the American's preferences to the policy makers in the government
Policy Agenda The issues that attract the serious attention of public officials and other people actively involved in politics
Political Issue Result of people disagreeing about a problem or the public policy.
Policymaking Institution Established by the US constitution, they scan the issues on the policy agenda
Public Policy Every decision that the government makes
Policy Impacts Effects that a policy has on people and on society's problems
Democracy Means of selecting policymakers and of organizing government so that policy reflects citizen's preferences
Majority Rule The will of over half the voters should be followed
Minority rights Basic principles such as freedom of speech and assembly which the majority cannot infringe on
Representation The relationship between the few leaders and the many citizens
Pluralist Theory States that groups with shared interests influence public policy by pressing their concerns through organized efforts
Elite and Class Theory Contends that our society is divided along class lines and than an upper-class elite pulls the strings of the government
Hyper pluralism Groups are so strong that government is weakened, as the influence of many groups cripples government's ability to make policy
Policy Gridlock They have a veto over policy
Political Culture The overall set of values widely shared within American society
Domestic Product The total value of all goods and services produced annually by the United States
