Nullification Doctrine | Calhoun wrote it when SC claimed the "tariff of abomination" was crushing the econ. It stated that the states had the final word on if laws were constitutional or not so they could declare it null and void. SC declared the tariffs of 1828 & 1832 null and void. Jackson called it treason. Clay created a compromise. |
American Indian Removal | wanted the Indians (savages) past the Miss. (out of the way of white expansion & conflicts would be lessened); only the federal gov could negotiate with the Indians over land bc Marshall declared them sovereign; the Cherokees didn't have to relocate due to court ruling; General Winfield Scott moved them west |
The Bank War | Bank of US = only bank gov could keep funds; Jackson wanted to destroy soft money; Jackson removed the federal funds and placed them in state banks which weakened the US bank and forced Biddle to take loans and raise interest rates; the bank was not rechartered & the financial system became flawed |
