substances that cant be chemically broken down into simpler substances

a substance made up of two or more elements that are chemically combined

two or more substances that are not chemically combined-they are physically combined

substances are UNEVENLY spread out- can be seperated, filtered, a suspensioin is this type of mixture

compounds:examples

water H20, salt NaCl, carbon dioxide CO2

physical property

characteristic of a material that can be seen ex. density, thermal conductor, state of matter, size, shape

physical change

change in color,shape, size or state of matter

chemical property

characteristic of a substance that indicates whether it can make a chemical change like flamibility or reactivity with oxygen

chemical change

change of a substance to a completely different substance

metals

left of the zigzag line, shiny, malleable, ductile, good conductors of electric current, good conductors of thermal energy

nonmetals

right of the zigzag line, not malleable/ductile, not shiny, poor conductors

have some properties of metals and some properties of nonmetals, semiconductors, found along the zigzag line,

another term for state of matter: solid, liquid, gas, plasma
