Reversible reaction

-a chemical reaction in which the products reform the original reactants
-not all reactions reversible

At equilibrium......

the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reverse reaction

What is the Equilibrium Expression?

K(eq)=[Products]ⁿ/[Reactants]ⁿ
-n = coefficients of equation

If K(eq) is < 1......

there are more products than reactants

If K(eq) is > 1......

there are more reactants than products

Le Chatelier's Principle

if a stress is applied to a system at equilibrium the system shifts in the direction that relieves the stress

If you add to one side the reaction will shift towards.....

the opposite side

If you decrease to one side of the reaction the reaction will shift towards.....

the side that was decreased

If the volume is increased the pressure is......, so the reaction will shift towards.....

-decreased
-the side with more moles of gas

If the volume is decreased the pressure is....., so the reaction will shift towards.....

-increased
-the side with the least moles of gas

If a catalyst is added to a system it will shift...

NO SHIFT
-helps both forward and reverse reactions

Precipitate

very slightly soluable

When predicting a precipitate if Q>K(sp) then.....

a precipitate will be formed

When predicting a precipitate if Q<K(sp) then.....

a precipitate will not be formed

Common Ion Effect

lowering of the solubility of a substance by the presence of a common ion

Example:
