Conflict

A problem between a character and someone or something else

internal conflict

A problem within a person's mind

external conflict

a problem a character has with an outside force

exposition

the beginning of a story when the setting and character are introduced

setting

where and when a story takes place

rising action

events that build suspense and lead to the climax

climax

the most exciting part of the story and the point of no return

falling action

events that lead to the resolution

the end of the story and it maybe resolved or unresolved

protagonist

the villain of the story

simile

a comparison of 2 things using like or as

metaphor

a comparison of 2 things without using like or as

alliteration

using the same sound at the beginning of words in a sentence or a line of poetry

personification

when something that is not a human is given human characteristics

inference

to make an educated guess

summary

a quick explanation of just the main idea

paraphrase

longer then a summary; when you put each sentence in your own words

stanza

a paragraph in a poem

narrator

the person telling of a story

speaker

the person telling the poem
