Bartholin's glands

glands that secrete lubricating mucous in the vagina; also called vestibular glands

cerclage

a technique of encircling the cervix uteri with a wire, ligature, or loop

cervix uteri

structure that lies between the ostium uteri and the isthmus

colpocentesis

a procedure in which fluid is aspirated through the vaginal wall using a syringe

colpocleisis

a surgical closure of the vagina

a procedure in which the vagina is sutured to the abdominal wall

the surgical repair of the vagina

colposcopy

a procedure in which a scope is used to view the vaginal and cervical area

colpotomy

a procedure using an open approach in which the fallopian tubes are identified and then occluded at vascular points

conization

a procedure performed on the cervix in which a cold knife is used to surgically cut a cone-shaped portion of tissue for examination

corpus uteri

the area of structures that begin at the fundus of the uterine cavity and move down to encompass the cervical canal or the external os

endometrium

the innermost layer of the uterus

enterocele

another term for vaginal hernia

fallopoian tubes

bilateral tubes that open on one end in the uterus and then open at the other end into the peritoneal cavity

fistula

an abnormal passage

fulguration

the use of an electric current to destroy living tissue, usually used to control bleeding

hymen

a membrane that covers the external opening of the vagina

hymenectomy

a procedure in which the hymen is excised

hysterectomy

a procedure in which the uterus is removed

hysteroscope

a fiber-optic or rigid scope used for diagnostic and surgical procedures in the uterus

intoitus

refers to an opening or space

in vitro fertilization

A process in which a mature egg is exposed to sperm in a laboratory setting. The ova are then implated in the uterus.

myomectomy

a procedure in which uterine fibroid tumors are removed from the wall of the uterus

omentectomy

removal of part of the omentum

oophorectomy

partial or total removal of the ovary

ovaries

produce eggs that are released during ovulation; also referred to as the female gonads

paravaginal

refers to the area around the vagina

Pereya procedure

a procedure in which sutures are laced through a Pereyra ligature carrier and the urethrovesical junction is raised up

perineum

the diamond-shaped area of skin between the upper area of the vaginal orifice and the anus; its purpose is to support the pelvic structures

pudendum

an inclusive term used to describe the external genitalia of the female body; also referred to as the vulva

salpingo-oophorectomy

Surgical removal of the fallopian tubes and ovaries

sling procedure

used to help correct urinary stress incontinence

trachelectomy

the removal of the cervix uteri

vagina

fibromuscular structure that connects with the external genitalia and ascends in a tubelike structure to the cervix uteri

vaginectomy

a procedure in which the vagina is excised
