Definitions

Fibrillation Rapid, random, inefficient and irregular contractions of the atria and ventricles
Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) A duct between the aorta and the pulmonary artery, which normally closes soon after birth, remains open (patent)
Septal defects Small holes in the septa between the atria or the ventricles
Congestive Heart Failure Condition where the heart is unable to pump its required amount of blood and blood accumulates in the lungs causing pulmonary edema (left sided heart failure) or in the abdominal organs and subcutaneous tissue of the legs (right sided heart failure)
Endocarditis Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart usually caused by bacteria
Mitral Regurgitation (insufficiency) Back flow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium due to congenital malformation of the mitral valve or degeneration of the mitral valve over time
Murmur An extra heart sound, heard between normal beats usually caused by a valvular defect
Thrill A vibration felt on palpation of the chest, often accompanies a murmur
Stenosis A narrowing
Aortic Stenosis Narrowing at the aortic valve-usually congenital
Pulmonic Stenosis Narrowing at the pulmonic valve-usually congenital
Arteriogenesis The formation of arteries
Angiography The radiographic visualization of blood vessels following the introduction of contrast media
Angiogenesis The formation of blood vessels in the embryo
Vascular Having a copious blood supply
Neovascularization Appearance of blood vessels into an area of previous ischemia
Vasoactive Exerting an effect on the diameter of a blood vessel
Vasoconstriction Decrease in the diameter of blood vessels
Vasodilation Increase in the diameter of blood vessels, especially arterioles, leading to an increased blood supply in the area
Vasospasm Constriction of blood vessels
Arteriopathy Any disease of an artery
Arteritis Inflammation of an artery
Vasculitis Inflammation of a blood or lymph vessel
Arteriosclerosis Hardening of a blood or lymph vessel
Atheriosclerosis A condition in which yellow plaques, containing cholesterol and lipid materials are insinuated into the walls of arteries
Arterionecrosis Death of cells comprising an artery
Arterioplasty Surgical repair or reconstruction of an arterhy
Cardiology The science or study of the heart
Cardiologist A scientist who studies the heart and its functions
Normal sinus rhythm A regular rhythm of the heart beats at rest, determined by auscultation or palpating a peripheral pulse
Normal sinus arrhythmia An irregular but normal heart beat in an athletic animal that speeds up and slows down, often with inspiration and expiration respectively
Cardiovascular Pertaining to the heart and blood vessels
Cardiomyopathy Non-inflammatory disease of heart muscle
Myocardial infarction Absent blood supply to cardiac muscles leading to cell death
Myocarditis Inflammation of cardiac muscle
Endocarditis Inflammation of the inner lining of the heart, including heart valves
Cardiomegaly Abnormal enlargement of the heart, whether from hypertrophy or dilation
Cardiopulmonary Pertaining to the heart and lungs
Cardiotoxin An agent with poisonous or deleterious effects on the heart
Japanese yew A cardiotoxin
Exudative Pericarditis Pus in the pericardial sac
Cardiac Tamponade Acute compression of the heart caused by increased intrapericardial pressure due to collection of blood or fluid in the pericardium from rupture of the heart, penetrating trauma or progressive effusion
