What is structural encoding Snapshot version of someone's face, get basic details such as male or female / young or old
What are face recognition units (FRUs) Gives us a feeling of recognition, that we know a person and have seen them before
What are person identity nodes (PIN) These are the things you know about someone, personal info and how you met them/how you know them etc
What is name generation This comes after FRUs and PIN, and you can recall the persons name
What is expression analysis See someone's face and can tell what emotional state they're in as it directly affects us
What is facial speech analysis Info coming from the face that helps us decide what a person is saying
What is directed visual processing Notice the more distinctive features of someone's face, such as freckles/glasses/beard etc
What is the cognitive system Can direct what some parts do and make other parts of model work harder, has extra info that can help with recognition
Young et al 1 Ex-service men's occipital lobes were looked at because they'd been injured and testing their recognition system.
Some lost ability to understand facial exp (loss of expression analysis), some couldnt recognise faces (loss of FRUs) and some couldnt match faces (loss of directed visual processing)
Conclusion to Young et al 1 Shows there are separate elements to the model and if you lose one thing you may not lose another
Young et al 2 People had to keep a diary of problems with face recognition, 1008 incidents, all problems fitted with the model - strength
Young et al 2 conclusion etc It is FRU > PIN > name however people may have confabulated or under/over exaggerate, lacks reliability and may show demand characteristics
Yin Looking at face recognition compared with buildings/objects, people were good at recognising faces but not upside down ones (Thatcher effect), could recognise other things upside down however
Results etc of Yin Face recognition system only knows the face the right way round and we do have a special system for identifying faces
