I was born on March 3, 1847 in ScotlandMy whole life I was facinated by sound. I didn't care much for school and only stayed there a few years
I liked to play the piano when I was young. I never needed to read music. As soon as I heard a tune I could play it right back. I was sure I would grow up to be a musician. One day I was goofing off with a friend of mine at his dad's farm. He became irritated with us and told us to make ourselves useful and try to find a way to quickly removed the husks from the kernals of wheat. So at age 14 I invented the Wheat Husker by altering a machine that we found in the barn.
In 1863 I became a teacher. I taught music and speech. I also taught the deaf. I was always VERY interested in the human voice and how it traveled through space. In 1876 my telephone patent was granted. A patent is a legal paper that gives me, alone, the right to produce my invention. I won a Gold Metal at the U.S. Centennial Celebration!
I was married to a lady named Mabel, who was deaf, and also had two daughters. I also had a son but he died only a few hours after birth.I spent a good portion of my time working on my telelphone but I also invented other things like the metal detector. This helped doctors in several wars to find bullets that had become lodged in soldiers. I also invented something called a metal breathing jacket which helped people who were too weak to breath to breath easier.
In 1882 I became a U.S. Citizen. Several years later I became the president of the Nationals Geographic Society. Before I became the president the magazine wasn't doing very well. I encouraged better and more picutures to be put in the magazine and it began to sell much better. The National Geographic Magazine is still in print today. In 1919, one of my inventions, a hydrofoil (a kind of boat), set a world record of 71 mph! Holy Cow! I also did work on biplanes. Although the Wright brothers were the first to fly a true airplane, a member of my group was the first to fly an airplane in Canada
Sadly, on August 2, 1922 I died of a heart attack. I was 74 years oldEven though a lot of my ideas were ahead of their time they lived on to help shape the modern world.
