He used the results from the Clarks doll experiment. On May 17, 1954 the decision came down that segregation in education was illegal. The chief justice was Earl Warren. |
| Grassroots Movement | a movement that begins on a local level. The sit ins were a grassroots movement because they were started by four local college students in Greensboro. |
| Boycott | to refuse to do something in order to create a change. The Montgomery Bus BOycotts are an example because the black people of Montgomery refused to take the bus to force desegregation. |
| Sit-Ins | On February 1, 1960 four college students from the Agricultural and Technology Institute ordered from Woolworths lunch counter. Some people supported them and others abused them. They inspired sit ins in 125 cities in 9 states. MLK join in Montgomery and was jailed. Kennedy wrote a letter to Kings wife Corretta. |
| Federalism | the division of power between state and local governments. This division created tension during the civil rights era because state governments like that of George Wallace of Alab refused to follow orders from the federal government like JFKs order to desegregate the University of Alabama.ama |
| Emmet Till | In August/September of 1955 in Money, Mississippi, 14 year old Emmett Till wolf whistles or says bye baby to Carolyn Bryant. Three days later her husband Roy Bryant and JW Milam take Emmett from his great uncles home, beat him, shoot him, then drown his body. The men are tried and found innocent and then confess to the murder. His mother, Maime Till holds and open casket funeral. |
