Terms | Definitions |
|---|---|
environment | surroundings |
orbit | the path of an object as it revolves around another object in space |
revolution | one complete orbit around the sun |
axis | an imaginary line that passes through Earth's center and its North and South Poles |
rotation | spinning of Earth on its imaginary axis, which takes about 24 hours to complete and causes day and night to occur |
latitude | distance north or south of the Equator, measured in degrees |
equator | Imaginary line that runs around the earth halfway between the North and South Poles; used as the starting point to measure degrees of north and south latitude. |
Tropic of Cancer | a line of latitude in the Northern Hemisphere located at 23.5 degrees north |
Tropic of Capricorn | a line of latitude about 23 degrees South of the equator |
low latitudes | area between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn receiving direct sunlight at sometime during the year making it almost always hot |
Arctic Circle | a line of latitude near but south of the north pole |
Antarctic Circle | a line of latitude north of the south pole |
high latitudes | The regions between the Arctic Circle and the North Pole and the Antarctic Circle and the South Pole. |
middle latitudes | also known as temperate regions, are the areas that lie primarily between 30 and 60 degrees latitude in both hemispheres. In this region the climate undergoes the greatest seasonal changes in temperature and moisture. |
geography | study of the earth's surface |
parallel | an imaginary line around the Earth parallel to the equator |
degree | a position on a scale of intensity or amount or quality, a unit of measure used to determine absolute location; on globes and maps, latitude and longitude are measured in degrees |
longitude | an imaginary great circle on the surface of the earth passing through the north and south poles at right angles to the equator, the distance east or west of the prime meridian, measured in degrees |
meridian | line on a map that runs from North Pole to South Pole, one of many lines on the global grid running from the North Pole to the South Pole; used to measure degrees of longitude |
Prime Meridian | meridian at zero degree longitude from which east and west are reckoned (usually the Greenwich longitude in England), line of the global grid running from the North Pole to the South Pole through Greenwich, England; starting point for measuring degrees of east and west longitude |
globe | a sphere on which a map (especially of the earth) is represented |
scale | size or measure according to a scale |
distortion | a change in the shape, size, or position of a place when it is shown on a map |
projection | The system used to transfer locations from Earth's surface to a flat map. |
compass rose | A tool on a map showing cardinal (N,E,S,W) and intermediate (NE,SE,NW,SW) directions. |
cardinal direction | one of the four compass points: north, south, east, west |
key | a list of the symbols used on a map |
grid | a network of horizontal and vertical lines that provide coordinates for locating points on an image |
