3 Main Branches of Science: 1.Life Science:study of living things.2.Earth Science:study of the Earth.3.Physical Science:the study of matter and energy.
Life Science: study of living things (structure and behavior) Examples:zoology and botany
Earth Science: study of the Earth.Includes:rocks,oceans,volcanoes,earthquakes,atmosphere,etc.Usually includes astronomy.
Physical Science: the study of matter and energy.
Scientific Method Observation: any use of the senses to gather information
Hypothesis: A possible explanation or answer to a question;an educated guess.Must be testable!!!!
Gravity: is a force that pulls 2 masses toward each other.Tool to measure weight:scale
Weight: is a downward pull on an object due to gravity.
Volume (What is,tools to measure it) Objects with well-defined shapes:formulas Example volume of a cube:length x width x height.Measurements always in 3 dimensions m3:standard unit used to measure the volume of solids.
Calculating the volume of a rectangular prism (regularly shaped object): v=l x w x h 1cm3 x 2cm3 x 3cm3 v=6cm3
Atom: The basic building block of matter the smallest possible unit of matter (too small to see !)
Calculating the volume of an irregular shaped object: When you put a irregular shape in a graduated cylinder and add water the water raise a little.
Observation: Creating a model (related to real life situations)
How to measure volume using a graduated cylinder Meniscus (what is, how measure volume in its presence) Put water in the graduated cylinder and then level your eyes eye level right above meniscus the measure eye level.
Subatomic particles of an atom 1.What are they 2.Where they are located 3.Charges on them 4.Which is the smallest? Biggest? Atom are very small particles that human eyes can't see. They are located everywhere but some places.Protons,Neutrons and Electrons. The atom and protons.
Molecule: A group of atoms bonded to together.A molecules is the smallest amount of a substance made of combined atoms that is considered to be that substance.
Do atoms move?: Yes because the molecule move together with the atoms.
What is Science?: is a process that use observation and investigation to gain knowledge about events in nature.
Data: is any pieces of information acquired through experimention
Multiple Trials: is information (data) gathered by performing the experiment numerous times.Must be write down (record) data.
What can happen on experimental data id analyzed?: Results support the hypothesis;can ask more questions. Results Do Not support the hypothesis;ask different question, report possible erros of experiment. Results are inconclsive (need further testing/more information);may need to run test again or redesign experiment.
What do scientists do with results of their experiment: Scientisits write scientific papers make presentaion create web sites.May result in other scientists...Reporting same experiment.Creating a new experiment to learn something more specific or study a new problem.
Matter: has mass and volume. All object are made of matter.
Examples of things that are NOT matter Light and sound are not made of matter. Light does not take up space or have mass in the same way that a table does.Although air is made of atoms,a sound traveling through air is not.
(Examples of thing that are NOT matter)Mass(what is are the, tools to measure it) Standard unit to measure mass:kilogram (kg).Smaller units are measured in grams (g).Grams:a metric unit used you measure mass 1 kg-100g.To measure mass use:Triple Beam Balance and Electromic Balance
