# Physical Science Chapter 3

## 19 terms · Hill-Murray 9th grade Physical Science Flashcards

### Vaporization

The Phase Change in which a substance changes from a liquid into a gas

### exothermic

a description of a change in which a system releases energy into its surroundings

### heat of fusion

the energy required to melt a solid

### endothermic

describes a reaction that absorbs energy from the surroundings

### Phase Change

the reversible physical change that occurs when a substance changes from one state of matter to another

### Solid

a form of matter that has a definite shape and volume

### Liquid

a substance in the fluid state of matter having no fixed shape but a fixed volume. Non Compressible. Particles are freely moving

### Gas

matter that does not have a definite shape or volume

### Kinetic Energy

the energy an object has due to its motion

### Heat of Vaporization

the amount of energy required for the liquid at its boiling point to become a gas

### Vapor Pressure

the pressure caused by the collisions of this vapor and the walls of the container

### Evaporation

the process by which water changes from liquid form to an atmospheric gas

### deposition

change from the gas state-----> solid state

### SUblimation

change from a solid ------> gas

### Condensation

gas or vapor to liquid ex: hot day and a glass of lemonade condensation drips down the side of it

### Pressure

the result of a force distributed over an area

### Absolute Zero

a temperature at 0 Kelvins

### Charles's Law

the direct proportion of the volume of a gas to its temp (in Kelvins) if the pressure and the number of particles of the gas are constant

### Boyle's law

A GAS'S VOLUME IS INVERSLY PROPORTIONAL TO ITS PRESSURE WHEN THE VOLUME OF A CONTAINER INCREASES THE PRESSURE OF THE GAS INSIDE IT DECREASES
