| ad lib | adding lines to the script |
| strike | when you remove all of the set and scenery after the play |
| plot | events in a play or story |
| amateur | a non-professional actor |
| antagonist | the main person representing evil |
| actor | the real person standing on the stage |
| cue | the action that tells you to begin |
| downstage | movement towards the audience |
| audition | to try out for a play |
| wings | the area to the left or right of the stage |
| improvisation | making it up on the spot |
| make-up | cosmetics used on the face or body |
| flats | wooden frames used to build sets |
| dress rehearsal | a run-through of the play including everything |
| costume | what actors wear to show you you're in character |
| conflicts | person vs. person, self, nature, society |
| comedy | a funny or humorous play |
| backstage | behind the area where acting is taking place |
| 1-act play | few, flat characters; one problem or conflict; lasts 30 minutes |
| 3-act play | many characters; developed more completely; lasts anywhere from 1-3 hours; intermission |
| proscenium theater | elegant, curtain, opera pit |
| round theater | inside, people sit all around the stage |
| thrust theater | platform, 3-side seating, intimate, audience next to stage |
| amphitheater | outside, level stage |
