| Assimilation | The process through which immigrants become part of American culture. Ex. Buying similar clothing, eating similar food, etc. |
| Cities | This where immigrants settled. They settled here because there were job opportunities and they were recreational past times (going to baseball games, vaudeville, department stores, Central Park, and the Zoo) |
| Tenements | These were old buildings which were overcrowded with people. Immigrants called th is home. It was located in the city slums and conditions were poor. |
| Skyscrapers | Built in the cities because of the little space that there was to build. |
| Trolleys | These were built in order to improve transportation in the city. |
| Newspapers | The purchase of newspapers grew tremendously throughout the cities. Why do you think this was so? |
| Chinese Exclusion Act | This was passed by Congress in order to limit the number of Chinese immigrants that came into the U.S. This was done because the Chinese had faced terrible discrimination when they had arrived here. |
| Pull Factor | Conditions that attract people to a new area (new job opportunities, better life, freedom). |
| Push Factor | Conditions that drive people to leave their homes (poor conditions, no jobs, no freedom, etc.) |
| Nativists | Wanted to put limits on the number of immigrants coming to the U.S. |
