Definitions

Archaebacteria The kingdom that contains organisms that are prokaryotic and live in extreme environments.
Thermophile Lives in intense heat. (Kingdom Archaebacteria)
Halophile Lives in high salt concentration. (Kingdom Archaebacteria)
Methanogen Take in carbon dioxide and give off methane. CANNOT LIVE IN OXYGEN. (Kingdom Archaebacteria)
Eubacteria The kingdom that contains organisms that are prokaryotic and live in every ecological niche. (live in soil, water, on the surface of plants and animals, in the guts of animals, everywhere)
Cyanobacteria (Blue Green Bacteria) An autotrophic and prokaryotic bacteria that reproduces through binary fission, has to have light to live, is found in aquatic areas, and can be blue, green, red, or orange.
Bacteria The domain of organisms that are heterotrophic and reproduce through binary fission
coccus Sphere shaped bacteria
bacillus Rod shaped bacteria
spirilla (spirochetes) Spiral shaped bacteria
strepto Bacteria in chain shaped colonies
staphylo Bacteria in cluster shaped colonies
diplo Bacteria in pairs
obligate aerobes Bacteria that must have oxygen (ex. TB, Diptheria)
obligate anaerobes Bacteria that cannot be in the presence of oxygen (ex. Tetanus, gangrene, botulism)
facultive anaerobes Bacteria that can be with or without oxygen (ex. soil bacteria, water bacteria, E. coli)
parasites Disease bacteria that live off of their host. (ex. Tetanus)
saprobe Bacteria that is a decomposer
autotroph Bacteria that makes it's own food
ribosomes The part of the bacteria that helps make protien
capsule The part of the bacteria that protects it
cell wall The part of the bacteria made of peptoglycan
pilus The part of the bacteria that is used in reproduction and also helps the bacteria stick to things
flagelum The part of the bacteria that allows it to move
nucleoid The part of the bacteria that holds the DNA material
endospore Produced when environmental conditions are harsh. Allows the bacteria to be dormant until favorable conditions return
prokaryotic Does not have a nucleus
