Definitions

Data Any pieces of information acquired through observation or experimentation.
density The ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance
Hypothesis An explanation that is based on prior scientific research or observation and that can be tested.
Inference an interpretation based on experience and knowledge rather than direct observation
interference the combination of two or more waves that results in a single wave
Law A summary of many experimental results and observations; tells how things work
Mean the average value of the data set
Median the number that falls directly in the middle of a data set when arranged in order from least to most.
medium a physical environment in which phenomena occur
meniscus the curve at a liquid's surface by which one measures the volume of the liquid.
Mode the value that appears the most often in a data set
Model A pattern, plan, representation, or description designed to show the structure or workings of an object, system, or concept
Observation The process of obtaining information by using the senses.
Prediction is an expectation of what is likely to happen in a situation based on observations.
Qualitative Data data that is expressed with out the use of numbers expressed in words
Quantitative Data data that is expressed in numbers and not words
Range the difference between the highest and the lowest values in a data set.
Scientific methods A series of steps followed to solve problems.
System is a set of related or connected parts or ideas that work together as a whole.
Theory An explanation that ties together many hypothesis and observations
Atom The smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element .
boiling the conversion of a liquid to a vapor when the vapor pressure of the liquid equals the atmospheric pressure.
compound a substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds
concentration the amount of a particular substance in a given quantity of a mixture
condensation the change of state from a gas to a liquid.
Electron A subatomic particle that has a negative charge.
Electron Cloud A region around the nucleus of an atom where electrons are likely to be found.
element a substance that cannot be separated or broken down into simpler substances by chemical means
Heterogeneous mixture a mixture that contains many parts in random amounts
Homogeneous mixture a mixture that contains many parts in constant amounts.
Liquid the state of matter that has a definite volume but not a definite shape.
melting the change of state in which a solid becomes a liquid by adding energy.
mixture a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined.
Molecular Motion The motion of the particles found in matter
molecule the smallest unit of a substance that keeps all of the physical and chemical properties of the substance.
Neutron A subatomic particle that has no charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom.
Nucleus In physical science, an atom's central region, which is made up of protons and neutrons.
Proton A subatomic particle that has a positive charge and that is found in the nucleus of an atom
pure substance a sample of matter either a single element or a single compound
solid the state of matter in which the volume and shape of a substance are fixed.
states of matter the physical forms of matter, which include solid, liquid, and gas
volume a measure of the size of a body in three-dimensional space.
weight a measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object, its value can change with the location of the object in the universe
evaporation the change of a substance from a liquid to a gas.
gas the form of matter that does not have a definite volume or shape.
sublimation the process in which a solid changes directly to a gas.
Emission Something that is given off or released during an experiment
precipitate a solid that is produced as a result of a chemical reaction in a solution
absolute zero the temperature at which molecule energy is at a minimum
change of state the change of a substance from one physical state to another
Chemical Bond an interaction that holds atoms or ions together
Chemical Bonding The combining of atoms to form molecules or ionic compounds
Chemical change a change that occurs when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties.
chemical equation a representation of a chemical reaction that uses symbols to show the relationship between the reactants and products
chemical formula a combination of chemical symbols and numbers to represent a substance
chemical Property a property of matter that describes a substance's ability to participate in chemical reactions.
chemical Reaction the process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances
Indicator and substance that show the presence of another substance (litmus paper)
physical change a change of matter from one form to another without a change in chemical properties.
physical property a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness.
product the substance that forms in a chemical reaction
reactant a substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction.
reactivity The ability of an element or substance to combine with another substance
solute in a solution, the substance that dissolves in the solvent
solution a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase
solvent in a solution, the substance in which the solute dissolves
Surface Tension the force that acts on the surface of a liquid and tends to minimize the area of the surface.
