The coagulase test detects the ability of an organism to coagulate plasma (the fluid portion of blood
This test is particularly important in the identification of pathogenic members of the genus Staphylococcus, such as Staphylococcus aureus
Nonpathogenic members, such as S.epidermidis and S.saprophyticus, are negative in the coagulase test.
It should be noted that this test is valid only for Gram positive Staphylococcus
Cultures used in this lab Staphylococcus aureus (+) and/or Staphylococcus epidermidis (-)
