# Forces and Motion

## 12 terms

A push or pull

### velocity

the speed of an object in a particular direction

### acceleration

speeding up, slowing down, turning

### speed

distance traveled per unit time

### distance

Total of all traveling

### displacement

distance and direction of an object's change in position from the starting point

### 1st Law of Motion

An object in motion stays in motion until a force makes it stop. An object at rest stays at rest until a force makes it move

### 2nd Law of Motion

A net force acting on an object causes the change to accelerate in the direction of the force. (Force=massxaccelaration)

### 3rd Law of Motion

for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Ex.- Bumper cars, frogs on a lily pad

### balanced forces

equal forces acting on an object in opposite directions. No movement.

### unbalanced forces

forces that produce a nonzero net force, which changes an object's motion.

### net force

the sum of the forces on an object when unbalanced forces are applied to it.
