9 terms · Flash cards with descriptions and images of Kepler's three laws of planetary motion.

Kepler's 1st Law

Planets travel in elliptical orbits with the sun at one focus of the ellipse.

Kepler's 2nd Law

A line drawn from the planet to the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal amounts of time.

Kepler's 3rd Law

The period of planet's revolution around the Sun (the length of a planet's year) is proportional to its distance from the Sun.

Kepler's 1st Law

This law means that the distance from the Sun to the planet changes constantly.

Kepler's 3rd Law

This law means that planets travel more quickly when they are closer to the sun and more slowly when they are farther away from the Sun.

Kepler's 3rd Law

This law means that planets that are closer to the Sun have shorter periods of revolution and travel more quickly on their orbital paths.
